Modern Front-End Engineering

From Browser Fundamentals to Production Architecture

Understand how browsers work, build reliable interfaces, and make informed architectural decisions. Move from the web platform through components, state, data, and rendering to performance, testing, and production delivery. Basic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and command-line knowledge is assumed.

How to use the book

  1. Build a mental model

Read the chapter to understand how the browser, language, or architectural boundary works.

  2. Study the examples

Connect the explanation to code and compare the costs of different approaches.

  3. Apply it in the Playground

Use the companion practical brief to investigate the chapter’s ideas in a small project.

  4. Review the trade-offs

Use the summaries, lecture decks, and reference appendices to revisit your decisions.

FAQ

Who is this book for?

Readers who know basic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and command-line usage and want to develop broader front-end engineering skills. Professional front-end experience is not assumed.

Is this a React or Vue book?

The web platform comes first. React and Vue provide comparative examples, while the book focuses on concepts that carry across frameworks.

How do the practicals work?

The Playground contains 18 exercise briefs. Most call for a small Vite and TypeScript project; follow each brief for its requirements. Runnable companion implementations are planned for a separate repository.

Are lecture slides available?

There are currently 18 lecture decks covering Chapters 1-18. Open a deck from Lecture slides to present it or use its print layout.

Where should I begin?

Start with Chapter 1 for the full progression, or choose a learning path above to revisit platform foundations, application architecture, or production engineering.

Can I download the book?

Yes! You can download the complete offline PDF edition or read the entire manuscript online in a single continuous view using the download section below.

Engineering principles

01

Understand the platform

Use browser behavior, web standards, accessibility, and security as the foundation for framework decisions.

02

Measure and verify

Support performance and reliability decisions with observations, tests, and production feedback.

03

Make trade-offs explicit

Choose the simplest approach that meets the requirements, and record its costs and constraints.
